Is It Better to Rent Gear in Puerto Natales or Inside Torres del Paine?
By Claudia Squadrito, trekking guide and former park ranger in Chile’s Magallanes Region.
Quick answer: Renting sleeping gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat) works well either in Puerto Natales or inside Torres del Paine, depending on how much weight you want to carry. Personal hiking gear, such as trekking poles, microspikes, backpacks and gaiters, should always be arranged in Puerto Natales, since fit and sizing matter and options inside the park are limited.
Overview: The Quick Answer
Renting a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat inside Torres del Paine can be a great option if you want to hike with less weight and arrive at each campsite with everything already prepared.
Renting your camping gear in Puerto Natales, on the other hand, gives you more freedom and may be a better choice if you prefer to carry and use the same equipment throughout your entire trek.
For trekking poles, microspikes, gaiters, backpacks, and other personal hiking equipment, I recommend getting everything sorted before entering the park. In Puerto Natales, you can test the gear, adjust it properly, and make sure it is right for you.
One of the questions I hear most often before the W Trek is whether it is better to rent camping gear in Puerto Natales or book it directly inside Torres del Paine.
The answer is not as simple as saying that one place is better than the other.
It depends on how much weight you want to carry, how much you want to spend, and, most importantly, how you want to experience the trek.
Arriving at the end of a long hiking day and finding your tent already prepared is very different from taking everything out of your backpack, finding your camping space, and setting up your tent after walking for several hours.
But using your own equipment throughout the entire circuit is also very different from sleeping in a different tent and sleeping bag at each campsite.
Both options work. You simply need to decide which one makes the most sense for you.
Renting Your Gear in Puerto Natales
Some travellers prefer to collect their tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat in Puerto Natales before beginning the trek.
This gives them time to check the equipment, learn how to set up the tent, and use the same gear throughout the entire route.
It can also be a good option for travellers who want more control over their budget or plan to continue camping in other parts of Patagonia after Torres del Paine.
The less convenient part is obvious: you will have to carry everything.
A tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat take up space and add weight to your backpack. Every morning, you will need to pack your camp, and every evening, you will need to set it up again.
Some travellers do not mind this at all. In fact, for many people, it is part of the experience. They enjoy carrying their own equipment, organising their backpack, and feeling more independent on the trail.
But I have also seen people begin the W Trek with an enormous backpack and realise after the first day that they had underestimated how much every extra kilogram matters after several hours of hiking.
Booking an Equipped Campsite Inside the Park
The other option is to reserve a campsite that already includes a set-up tent and, depending on the type of booking, a sleeping bag and sleeping mat as well.
The biggest advantage is that you can hike with a lighter backpack.
You arrive at the campsite, leave your belongings, and your sleeping space is already organised. After a long day on the trail, that can feel like a real luxury.
This option is especially convenient for travellers who have little experience setting up tents, do not want to carry bulky camping gear, or simply want to focus on the hiking itself.
Of course, it normally requires more planning. You need to book in advance and carefully check what is included each night. You should never assume that every campsite provides exactly the same equipment or services.
You will also have less control over the model or features of the equipment waiting for you. For most people, this is not a problem, but it may matter if you are particularly sensitive to the cold or have very specific preferences.
Sleeping Gear Is One Thing. Hiking Gear Is Another.
This is where many travellers get confused.
You can have every night of the W Trek perfectly organised and still need trekking poles, a backpack, waterproof trousers, gaiters, or microspikes.
This type of gear is better arranged in Puerto Natales.
You cannot find every type of equipment inside Torres del Paine. The park does not work like a city where you can simply walk to another shop when something does not fit or is not suitable.
The different areas of the park are far apart, services are limited, and you may not get another opportunity to find the correct size or the equipment you need.
Trekking poles should be adjusted to your height. Microspikes need to fit securely over your hiking boots. A backpack should feel comfortable before you begin walking.
I would much rather someone discover that a piece of equipment does not fit properly in Puerto Natales than at the beginning of a trail.
So, Which Option Is Better?
If you want to hike with less weight, have little experience with camping equipment, or simply want to arrive and rest, booking an equipped campsite inside Torres del Paine can be an excellent decision.
If you prefer greater independence, want to use the same equipment throughout the circuit, or need more control over your budget, renting your gear in Puerto Natales and carrying your own camp can also work very well.
There is no single option that is right for everyone.
The important thing is not to choose based only on price or convenience. Think about how much weight you are prepared to carry, your previous experience, and how you want to feel at the end of each hiking day.
Sometimes, paying a little more to walk with less weight is completely worth it.
Other times, carrying and setting up your own tent is part of the adventure you were looking for.
My Recommendation
Before booking or renting anything, check every night of your itinerary and confirm exactly what is included.
Then decide which equipment you want to carry and which things you would prefer to find ready when you arrive.
For tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping mats, both options can work well.
For trekking poles, microspikes, and other personal equipment that needs to fit or be adjusted correctly, I recommend arranging everything before entering the park.
